Dancing in the park

The Little Rock River Market's Movies in the Park will screen Dirty Dancing (rated PG-13) at sundown Wednesday at First Security Amphitheater, Riverfront Park, in the River Market District (between Ottenheimer Market Hall, 400 President Clinton Ave., and the Arkansas River). Sponsor is the Central Arkansas Library System; series sponsor is Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. Admission is free; families, picnics and pets are welcome, but an adult must accompany all children under 18 (ID required). The amphitheater opens an hour before screenings. Artists and veterans

The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in MacArthur Park, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock, will screen the documentary Art in the Face of War at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, part of its "Movies at MacArthur" series. The film features eight artists and World War II veterans recounting their service experience and their use of art for journalism, as a tactical tool and to preserve their own sanity. Wiz tryouts

The Weekend Theater, 1001 W. Seventh St., will hold auditions for the musical The Wiz (music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, book by William F. Brown, loosely based on The Wizard of Oz) at 10 a.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday. Director Danette Scott Perry and Music Director Leah Thomas will be casting five male and four female leads and an ensemble of at least 12 (six female, six male), preferably 17 and older, in "all races, sexes, shapes, sizes and heights." All performers must be able to move; dance experience is a plus, but not mandatory. Be prepared to sing -- choose music that shows rock, gospel and/or soul; musical numbers from the show will be allowed. Audition forms and more details are available online at tinyurl.com/jpy4yr6. Con man and pirates

Praeclara and Wildwood Park for the Arts will hold open auditions for Meredith Willson's The Music Man and Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, by appointment, 5-9 p.m. Friday at Wildwood, 20919 Denny Road, Little Rock. Callbacks and dance selections will start at 10 a.m. Saturday. Director Bevan Keating and choreographer Rebecca Stalcup will cast adult, youth and child singers, dancers and actors for principal and supporting roles and chorus. Music Man production dates are Oct. 21-23; for Pirates, March 31-April 2. Auditioners should prepare one song or piece that displays voice type and range and provide sheet music for the accompanist. Supporting and main roles are paid positions, with honorariums for chorus and children's roles. Deadline to sign up for an audition is noon Friday. Low Key directors

Hot Springs community arts organization Low Key Arts has hired two new staff members -- Bobby Missile as artistic program director and David Hill as executive director -- replacing outgoing executive director and founder Bill Solleder, who is joining Visit Hot Springs as special events manager. Solleder started Low Key Arts in 2005 to "produce original, forward­ thinking and independent music and art." The organization puts on the annual Valley of the Vapors music festival, Hot Water Hills and Arkansas Shorts -- ­ A Night of Short Film and operates solar-powered radio station KUHS-FM, 97.9.
