Mac Chitwood, 26, was put in the Sharp County jail in Ash Flat.

Cave City police Sgt. David Edwards responded to a call about someone driving recklessly in the First Baptist Church parking lot on Main Street at 1:30 a.m. July 11, Stephens said. When Edwards arrived, the driver of the vehicle fired one shot, which struck Edwards' patrol unit.

Edwards was not injured.

The driver fled on Center Street and Edwards chased him, Stephens said in a release. Chitwood led Edwards on the pursuit for about 3 miles before Chitwood lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Chitwood was flown by medical helicopter to White River Medical Center in Batesville for treatment and was released to police custody later that day.

Stephens said the vehicle Chitwood was driving was reported stolen from a Baxter County residence. Officers also said they found near the wrecked vehicle a firearm reported stolen from the residence.
