Arkansas unemployment stays at record-low 3.8 percent

The state's unemployment rate remained at a record-low 3.8 percent in June, the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services said Friday.

The agency said the rate matched May's 3.8 percent figure. That set a new monthly low for Arkansas since at least 1957, which is as far back as employment records go.

The rate remained the same despite a decline in the state's civilian labor force. That figure went down 2,803 because of 3,147 fewer employed Arkansans and 344 additional unemployed Arkansans, the agency said in a statement.

The number of jobs in the government sector dropped by 5,300 in June, due in part to public schools and universities going out of session for the summer. With 900 jobs added, professional and business services had the biggest increase of any sector, the statement said.

The national unemployment rate went up in June, rising from 4.7 percent in May to 4.9 percent.
