Glyndal Ray Plumley, 75, of Taylor was arrested Tuesday and has been charged in the death of Tami Benson, 47. Plumley is being held in the Columbia County jail and faces a charge of first-degree murder.

He appeared Thursday in Columbia County Circuit Court and requested that an attorney be appointed for him.

According to the probable-cause affidavit released by the office of prosecutor David Butler, the Columbia County sheriff's office was contacted Tuesday afternoon about a shooting at 2289 Columbia County Road 21 in Taylor. When deputies and Arkansas State Police troopers arrived, they found Benson.

The affidavit stated that Plumley initially said Benson was shot when the gun went off during a struggle between the two, but he could not describe how the altercation took place. Investigators determined that evidence did not match Plumley's statement.

Benson was shot twice, according to the affidavit.

Sheriff Mike Loe said authorities suspected that the shooting arose out of a domestic dispute. The affidavit stated that Plumley had gone to the sheriff's office July 13 and reported that Benson had taken money from him. He said at the time that Benson had been staying with him at his home, had been evicted, and that he had allowed her to return there to live.
