I-49 lanes to close 5 nights for work

Construction on Interstate 49 in Johnson will require another series of overnight lane closures for five days beginning today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Beginning today, the inside and outside lanes of I-49 between the Clear Creek bridges south of Johnson Mill Boulevard and the north side of the Johnson Mill interchange will undergo alternating closures through Friday, weather permitting.

The northbound lane closures will take place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., while the southbound lane closures are scheduled to last from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The closures will accommodate the removal of temporary concrete barriers, the milling of existing pavement and resurfacing it with new asphalt, the department said.

The work is part of the $28.3 million project to widen I-49 to six lanes from four on a 4.5-mile section between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale. The work is scheduled to be completed later this year.
