Mobile consulate to aid Guatemalans

The consul general of Guatemala and his staff will be in Little Rock this week to hold a mobile consulate that can provide assistance to Guatemalans living in the area.

The mobile consulate will be set up at the Southwest Community Center -- 6401 Baseline Road in southwest Little Rock -- on Saturday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and on July 31 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Little Rock's Hispanic population, including Guatemalans, is about 6.8 percent, or nearly 13,000 residents, according to 2010 U.S. census figures.

The mobile consulate will allow Guatemalan residents with the proper paperwork to acquire passports, consular ID cards or birth registrations. The birth registration is free. A passport costs $65, and a consular ID card is $25.

Fees may be paid with a money order or cash.

Requirements to obtain a passport or consulate card include one of the following:

• An identity card.

• A personal identification document.

• A birth certificate.

More information is available from the Guatemalan Consulate office in Houston, Texas, at (713) 953-9531 or the Little Rock Southwest Community Center at (501) 918-3975.

This will be Consul General Jose Barillas' second visit to Little Rock since September.
