Police: 3 shot, 1 arrested in Pine Bluff attempted robbery

Police said an attempted robbery in Pine Bluff left three men shot and one in jail early Monday morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers were trying to locate the origin of gunshots when Kirel Young, 20, stopped them in the parking lot of 2215 South Blake St., according to a news release from the department.

Young had been shot several times and said his friend, Michael Johnson, 20, had also been shot. According to a separate incident report, one officer stayed with Young while the other found Johnson, who had also sustained gunshot wounds, less than a quarter-mile away at the intersection of 20th Avenue and Arlington Street.

The officer found Johnson — shot in the left shoulder and left leg — in the back seat of a blue Dodge Charger that had driven into a ditch at the intersection, the report said. Johnson told the officer that he and Young, the driver, were driving down Arlington slowly when a man entered the car, drew a gun and tried to rob them.

Johnson fought with the man, which led to Johnson and Young being shot, the report said.

A third Pine Bluff officer, meanwhile, was sent to 1108 West 24th Ave., a little more than 2 miles from the scene of the shooting, on a report of a person who was shot, according to a police report. There, 18-year-old Jaylin Cobbs, told the officer someone he didn't know drove up next to him near Cherry Street Liquor and fired three shots, hitting him once in the upper right leg.

Cobbs told police he ran to his cousin’s house on 24th Avenue after the shooting.

Police did not find the crime scene Cobbs told them about, the report said. The detective investigating the earlier shooting then determined Cobbs shot Young and Johnson, authorities said. According to the report, the detective also said Cobbs might have shot himself.

Cobbs was discharged from Jefferson Regional Medical center and booked into the Jefferson County jail, where he was being held on two counts of first-degree battery. Johnson and Young were also taken to the medical center and are expected to survive, police said.
