Sickened by heat, hiker hospitalized

A hiker overcome by the heat and stranded on a trail in Johnson County last weekend was rescued by sheriff's deputies, firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

The man, who was not identified in the Johnson County sheriff's Facebook posting, suffered from heat exhaustion Saturday afternoon on a hiking trial off Forest Service Road 1475 near Ozone north of Clarksville. The hiker and his 13-year-old son were stranded for about four hours.

A sheriff's deputy who responded to the call found the man and his son near some bluffs about 400 yards off the forest road. The man was weak and unable to walk. The deputy sent the son to the road to wait for other responding units.

Responding were a team from Johnson County EMS, rural firefighters and auxiliary deputies who carried the man out of the woods. He was taken to Johnson County Regional Medical Center for treatment.
