BENTONVILLE -- James Smith announced he'll run for re-election for the City Council Ward 3, Position 1 seat.

Smith is a certified financial planner and market president and chief lending officer for Bank of Gravett.

He has served on the City Council since June 2014, on the Advertising and Promotions Commission since 2015 and sits on the Public Arts Advisory Committee.

"My family and I appreciate the strides Bentonville has made over the past few years as we transition into a world-class community," he said in a news release. "Preserving what is great about old Bentonville while constantly introducing new amenities is exhilarating."

He said the city must take "additional steps" to maintain its trail system and continue to upgrade transportation and general infrastructure. Smith also promised to pursue options that would reduce utility costs.

Smith is a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. He participated in Leadership Benton County, served as the chairman of what is now the Northwest Arkansas Mercy YMCA, is a former vice chairman of the Bentonville/Bella Vista Chamber of Commerce and was on the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal's "40 under 40" in 2007.

Smith was an active-duty military police officer in the Army from 1989 to 1994. He graduated from the Bentonville Citizen's Police Academy in 2012 and the Certified Emergency Response Team in 2012.
