Mall guard accidentally shoots colleague in buttocks, police say

PITTSBURGH — Police say a security guard at a mall in the Pittsburgh suburbs accidentally shot another guard in the buttocks while loading his personal weapon.

Ross Township police told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review the shooting happened about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the security office at the Ross Park Mall. The mall was closed at the time.

Police said the mall guards aren't armed, and the guard was handling his own gun at the end of his shift. He has been fired.

Police said Universal Protection Services of Pittsburgh provides security at the mall. Nobody answered the phone at the company Wednesday, and a voicemail message was not immediately returned.

The wounded guard was treated and released from a hospital. Police don't plan to file charges.
