BLUE JAYS

Deal done for Upton

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. from the San Diego Padres.

The Blue Jays also received cash from San Diego. In return, the Padres get minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez.

Upton is batting .256 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI and 20 stolen bases. The 12-year veteran has also played for Tampa Bay and Atlanta.

Upton is in the fourth year of a five-year, $75.25 million contract he signed with the Braves before the 2013 season. He's owed $16.45 million next season.

Upton sat out San Diego's past two games, including Monday's 4-2 loss at Toronto. The Padres are making their first visit to Toronto this week.

Rodriguez, 19, is in his third season with the Bluefield Blue Jays in the Rookie level Appalachian League. He's 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in six starts and was rated Toronto's No. 18 prospect by MLB.com.

Upton is the fourth player traded by the rebuilding Padres since early June. The exodus began with right-hander James Shields and continued with reliever Fernando Rodney and left-hander Drew Pomeranz.

WHITE SOX

Ventura: Can work with Sale

CHICAGO -- Robin Ventura insists he can work with Chris Sale despite the suspended ace's critical comments about the White Sox manager.

Sale is serving a five-day, unpaid ban after he destroyed throwback uniforms the team was supposed to wear for his start Saturday. Sale told MLB.com in a story published Monday that he doesn't regret standing up for what he believed and said Ventura should have stood up for his players.

Ventura shook off the comments Tuesday and supported General Manager Rick Hahn's decision to send the left-hander home after the incident.

Ventura said Sale went "over the line," adding that "everything that happened was in [the clubhouse]. I'm going to keep it in there."

CARDINALS

Rosenthal has inflamed shoulder

NEW YORK -- The St. Louis Cardinals put reliever Trevor Rosenthal on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

Manager Mike Matheny said Rosenthal recently mentioned he wanted to get checked for a possible problem. The former closer is undergoing tests that might show why he suddenly became so ineffective.

"Hopefully, it can be a step in the right direction," Matheny said.

Rosenthal, 26, lost his closer's job in late June. The right-hander is 2-4 with a 5.13 ERA and 14 saves in 18 chances, and Matheny had said Rosenthal wouldn't be used in key spots for a while.

"It was more trying to find spots where we could get him in there and get things right," Matheny said.

Rosenthal led the majors with a combined 93 saves the past two seasons. He had a 2.11 ERA in April and May this year, but then gave up 15 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings in June and July.

RANGERS

Lohse designated for assignment

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kyle Lohse has been designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers after only two starts.

The Rangers made the move Tuesday when Nick Martinez was recalled from Class AAA Round Rock to start that night's game against Oakland. Lohse had been the scheduled starter for the Rangers.

Lohse lost both his starts and had a 12.54 ERA for Texas since being called up just before the All-Star break. He allowed 15 hits and 13 runs in 91/3 innings with 3 strikeouts and 5 walks.

The 37-year-old right-hander had gone 2-5 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 starts for Round Rock after signing a minor league deal with Texas.

Martinez had been optioned to Round Rock when Lohse was brought up this month.

MARLINS

Gordon suspension up Thursday

MIAMI -- Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon will be eligible for reinstatement from his 80-game suspension on Thursday prior to Miami's game against St. Louis.

Gordon, last year's National League batting champ, was suspended for violating the league's performance enhancing drug policy.

He will be looking to help the Marlins (53-46) make a postseason push, although he will not be eligible to participate as part of his violation.

"We're going to blend him back in for sure," Marlins Manager Don Mattingly said. "We feel like we're capable of getting into the playoffs and if we get to the playoffs he can't play so it's kind of a balancing act of trying to get in and what do you do when you get there?"

Derek Dietrich has been the Marlins' everyday second baseman filling in for Gordon and has hit .275 with 15 doubles, 4 home runs, and 30 RBI.

"Dietrich has been very good for us in different areas and we will kind of go back to our original plan of using Dietrich all over the place, but not being able to throw him in there every day," Mattingly said.
