Driver killed when car runs off Arkansas highway

A Louisiana man was killed Wednesday when his car veered off an Arkansas highway and ended up in a patch of trees, authorities said.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. on Arkansas 159 south of Eudora in Chicot County, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Police say Eddie Purvis, 66, of Oak Grove, La. was driving a 2004 Dodge Status south on the highway when the vehicle crossed the centerline and went onto the northbound shoulder.

Purvis then overcorrected, sending the vehicle back across the highway and into trees off the roadway, the report said.

Conditions at the time of the single-vehicle crash were described as cloudy and wet.

The death was the 294th on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
