Quarterback Drew Brees (front) and the New Orleans Saints spent Wednesday helping the West Virginia community where they’re opening training camp recover from deadly flooding last month.

NEW YORK -- A person familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday that the New York Jets have re-signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one-year deal worth $12 million, ending months of speculation and uncertainty surrounding the team's quarterback spot.

Fitzpatrick, 33, set the franchise record with a career-high 31 touchdown passes last season while helping lead the Jets on a playoff push in Todd Bowles' first season as coach.

The deal was reached Wednesday night, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the signing.

COWBOYS

Longer suspension?

FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas defensive end Randy Gregory is facing a longer suspension over another violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, and owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't expect to see the troubled player at training camp in California.

With Gregory already suspended for the first four games this season, Jones said Wednesday that the Cowboys haven't heard from the league about a possible 10-game ban for another failed drug test. A day after reports that Gregory was in rehab, Jones acknowledged that he was undergoing treatment.

Considered one of the best pass rushers in the 2015 draft, Gregory slid to the Cowboys at the end of the second round after he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL combine. His first suspension was announced in February.

CHIEFS

Charles on PUP list

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs placed running back Jamaal Charles on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday, though Coach Andy Reid said it should not be considered a setback in his return from a knee injury.

Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. He had surgery soon afterward and was far enough along in his recovery that he participated in some drills during mandatory minicamp.

The Chiefs can take Charles off the PUP list whenever he is medically cleared, but that likely will not happen soon. Veterans do not report for the start of training camp until Friday, and even then Reid said he plans to take it slow with his star running back.

RAMS

QB Foles released

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Rams have released quarterback Nick Foles after failing to find a trade destination for the disgruntled quarterback.

The Rams announced the move Wednesday, one day before their veterans report to training camp.

Foles hasn't been around the Rams since they traded up to choose California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the draft this spring. The veteran skipped offseason workouts while Los Angeles attempted to trade him.

Foles spent just one season with the Rams, who acquired him from Philadelphia in a trade for Sam Bradford. Foles started 11 games for St. Louis last season, throwing for 2,052 yards and seven touchdowns for the NFL's worst passing offense.

Goff and veteran Case Keenum are competing for the starting job at training camp.

PATRIOTS

Start without Brady

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots are getting ready for the season -- and the prospect of playing their first four games without quarterback Tom Brady.

The Patriots reported for training camp on Wednesday. Brady can take part in practice and the preseason, but he will miss the first four regular-season games. That's his punishment for his part in what the league found to be a scheme to illegally deflate footballs in the 2015 AFC championship game.

Coach Bill Belichick said there is finally some "definition" to the penalty, which has dragged on for 18 months.

Belichick gave no indication how he would use the practice time to prepare his quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo is the backup, and the team also drafted Jacoby Brissett this year.

REDSKINS

No replacement yet

RICHMOND, Va. -- Washington Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said the team would be in no rush to sign someone to replace outside linebacker Junior Galette, who tore his right Achilles' tendon on Sunday.

Gruden said the team will opt instead to evaluate players already on the roster during training camp.

Galette missed last season after rupturing his left Achilles' tendon late in the preseason and then spent the past 11 months working his way back from surgery. He anticipated returning to the field at the start of training camp, which begins today.

However, on Sunday, while doing drills on his own, Galette tore the opposite Achilles' tendon.

Coaches had planned on using Galette alongside Ryan Kerrigan, who led the team with 91/2 sacks last season, and Preston Smith (eight sacks). Now, Gruden and his assistants, and General Manager Scot McCloughan and his staff, must decide whether to add another veteran to the roster.

For now, team officials will evaluate the talent currently on the roster to help determine whether or not they need additional help.

SAINTS

Team lends hand in flood-ravaged West Virginia

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The New Orleans Saints have spent much of their first full day in West Virginia helping the community where they’re opening training camp recover from disastrous flooding.

Much of the Saints’ efforts were focused on a park where there are playing fields, public tennis and basketball courts, and a playground.

Right tackle Zach Strief said, “If any organization understands what it means to clean up from a natural disaster,” it’s the Saints, who played a significant role in helping New Orleans recover after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

The Saints are in their third year holding training camp at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. They’re slated to start practicing today.

Flooding in late June killed 23 people in West Virginia, including 15 in Greenbrier County, while damaging numerous structures.
