Cartoon was offensive

As a Christian, loyal American, Great Depression survivor, ex-Democrat, World War II veteran, Second Amendment supporter and senior citizen, I am highly offended by the cartoon of Vladimir Putin labeled with Donald Trump's name.

It seems left-leaners are being embraced by the editors of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. I regret that I have recently renewed my subscription.

Didn't say thank you

Hello out there. Remember me? I just got released from the asylum in time to watch the GOP convention. I loved every minute of it.

One thing was sadly missing--Gov. John Kasich. He didn't go on TV and thank the thousands of people who came to his state and spent millions of dollars. If Governor Asa had not even said "Thank you" if something this big came to Arkansas, we would have to send a delegation to Little Rock to "help him get his mind right." That will never happen.

Thank you, Governor Asa, and lead on.

Difficult, clear choice

Say what you will about Hillary Clinton's politics, but let's address some facts. For over two decades Republicans have expended tremendous amounts of time, energy, and resources trying to bring down the Clintons. They have yet to succeed. I'm making no claims of guilt or innocence regarding accusations made against Hillary Clinton. I'm simply pointing out the fact that some have made a career of demonizing the Clintons through unsuccessful efforts at proving criminal activity on their part. Regardless of one's opinion, U.S. citizens are "innocent until proven guilty."

Comment all you want regarding Donald Trump's politics, which is not an easy thing to do considering how often his politics change, but let's look at some more facts. Donald Trump is on record making racist and xenophobic comments and insulting comments toward women and the military. Trump has a recorded history of failed businesses and bankruptcies. Trump has been married three times and admitted to infidelity. Yes, I know what Bill did, but Hillary's the one running for president. The point is that Trump has a proven record of less than moral conduct, while Hillary has nothing more than accusations from an opposing political party.

Never before have two candidates for president in this country been so disliked. However, of the two candidates presented, there is a clear choice. For many the choice may be difficult, but clear none the less. We can have the antagonistic, blowhard, bullying, ridiculously clown-like reality show star with a proven record of immorality and no record of political leadership, or we can have the candidate who certainly comes with her share of controversies, but has a proven record of public service in an array of capacities. You don't have to be a Democrat or Republican to see the difference. You just have to be a reasonable person.

Then it has to be good

I just love it when progressives say that someone scares them. That's the person I want elected!

Was great experience

Whoever did page layout on the Voices page on July 21st did a great job, in my opinion. The last three letters were great reading.

Linda Barnes of Prairie Grove on capital punishment, from someone with a dog in the fight, was right on. Over the years we've seen dozens from all over the country set free from death row. Many were there for decades, often because of police or prosecutorial corruption. How can anyone of conscience still see it as an acceptable punishment? Since the murders keep happening, it is certainly not a deterrent.

After this very serious, sad subject, Karl Hansen of Hensley made my day. Often feeling very lonely in our blood-red state, his letter was a delight. To be able to take topics from your paper's headlines and make someone almost laugh out loud is a talent. If he's not a writer by profession, he could be.

The icing on the bottom of the cake was Gary Uselton's letter on plagiarism. These three letters made a great reading experience.

Helps the unfortunate

Hillary Clinton has been running a smooth, positive campaign at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. However, there has been a lot of mudslinging.

At the Republican convention, they were saying "lock her up." I believe Donald Trump is a dangerous man. It appears he is in solid with Vladimir Putin. Likewise Trump has ties with Russia, and that's where those leaks in the emails reportedly have come out.

Bill Clinton has painted a positive picture of Hillary at the convention. She has helped the unfortunate in many ways, including making it possible for poor people to get an education. At 9/11 she was beside a lady who was badly burned. Not for media coverage, but as a friend in caring need. Yet people think she should go to prison.

I think Trump is worse than Barry Goldwater. He would most likely to get us in nuclear war.

Character, principles

On Tuesday Philip Martin wrote: "Like the conservatives of Weimar Germany, our Republican 'leaders' seem to have convinced themselves that character and principle don't matter ..."

Give me a break. I believe Hillary Clinton has spent the last 40 years proving she has no character or principle.

I normally don't read Martin's columns, but I was bored Tuesday. I doubt I will be that bored again. You have the three stooges of columnists in Martin, Paul Krugman and John Brummett.
