5 nights of lane closures scheduled to widen I-49

Construction on Interstate 49 in Washington County will require a series of overnight lane closures for five days beginning Sunday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews will remove concrete barriers, overlay the widened median and resurface existing road surfaces in the northbound and southbound lanes between the Clear Creek bridges south of Johnson Mill Boulevard and the north side of the Johnson Mill interchange.

The inside and outside lanes of I-49 will alternately be closed at night through Friday, weather permitting, to allow for the work, the department said. Northbound lane closures will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Southbound lane closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen I-49 to six lanes from four on a 4.5-mile section between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is expected to be completed by year's end, the department said.
