I-49 overpass job to affect boulevard

Work on a section of Interstate 49 will require overnight lane closures on Johnson Mill Boulevard in Johnson for three days beginning Sunday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The painting of structural steel girders of the I-49 overpass on Johnson Mill will require the eastbound and westbound lanes between the I-49 ramp intersections to be alternately closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily through Wednesday, weather permitting.

Single-lane traffic will be maintained in each direction during the work, the department said. Main lane traffic on I-49 will not be affected. Traffic will be controlled using signs, barrels and flaggers.

The work was original scheduled this week but was delayed, the department said. It is part of a $28.3 million project to widen I-49 to six lanes from four on a 4.5-mile section between U.S. 71B in Johnson and U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is expected to be completed by year's end.
