JONESBORO -- Mrs. Fuller, wife of the county jailer, prevented a jail delivery last night when she detected Walter Strope, held on a charge of grand larceny, trying to escape through the residence section of the jail. Had he succeeded escape would have been open to all the other prisoners, as Strope had unlocked all the doors. Where he obtained the key is not known.

• The Pulaski County Election Commission signed a contract Friday to lease 500 voting machines, which are to be delivered in time for use in the November general election. The new contract with Automatic Voting Machine Division of AVM Corporation of Jamestown, N.Y., is an amended version of one executed March 15. It increases the number of machines to be leased from 300 to 500. Wylie D. Cavin Sr., chairman of the Election Commission, and Glenn L. Jermstad, a Commission member, presented the contract to County Judge Arch Campbell for his signature. Judge Campbell, who has opposed spending County money for voting machines, said only, "Well, you bought 'em, didn't you?" He refused to discuss the matter further.

• If a proposed curfew for teen-agers in North Little Rock doesn't pass at a special meeting called for 6:15 p.m. today, it should get a second chance at 6:30 p.m. An apparent lack of communication between Mayor Patrick Henry Hays and four aldermen late Monday afternoon turned into stubbornness as both sides said their meetings will go on as scheduled -- with different versions of a curfew ordinance.

• The Arkansas Racing Commission expects to approve electronic-gambling regulations when it meets Tuesday in Little Rock, the agency manager says, bringing another wagering option a step closer to reality at the state's two parimutuel racetracks. As drafted, the rules authorize around-the-clock betting -- except for Christmas Day and Easter Sunday -- on as many as 1,000 machines each at the Oaklawn Park thoroughbred racetrack in Hot Springs and Southland Greyhound Park in West Memphis. But don't look for the tracks to be open 24/7, at least not right away. "They don't plan to do that," said Shelby McCook, the commission manager. "But we made the rules so they could."
