Marlins blank Cards, even up NL wild-card race

MIAMI -- Christian Yelich and Jeff Mathis each had three hits and drove in two runs to help lead the Miami Marlins to an 11-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

Houston Astros pitcher and former Arkansas Razorback Dallas Keuchel will look to rebound from Monday’s loss to the New York Yankees when he faces the Detroit Tigers today at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run home run and Martin Prado had a two-run double for the Marlins. They drew even with the Cardinals at 56-48 for the second NL wild-card spot.

Miami outfielder Ichiro Suzuki remained at 2,998 hits, going 0 for 2 after entering in the sixth inning. Suzuki is 2 for 16 on the homestand that concludes today.

Colin Rea exited early with an elbow injury in his Marlins debut after being acquired from San Diego in a trade. Rea pitched 31/3 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 4.

David Phelps (5-5) relieved Rea and threw 22/3 scoreless innings, striking out four, to earn the victory.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a double in the fourth inning. Molina is hitting .385 (20 for 52) with two home runs and four RBI during the span.

St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia (7-8) also only lasted 31/3 innings. He allowed six runs and seven hits.

The Marlins scored four runs in the first, sparked by Ozuna's two-run home run -- his 19th.

Miami also scored four in the fourth keyed by a two-run double by Prado to push its lead to 8-0. Prado is hitting .472 (17 for 36) with 2 home runs and 11 RBI in his last 10 games.

BREWERS 5, PIRATES 3 Hernan Perez drove in three runs with a two-run home run and an RBI single, lifting host Milwaukee over Pittsburgh after the Pirates dealt closer Mark Melancon to Washington.

PHILLIES 9, BRAVES 5 Jeremy Hellickson pitched into the sixth inning and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run double to help visiting Philadelphia beat Atlanta.

GIANTS 5, NATIONALS 3 Joe Panik hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and host San Francisco snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Washington.

ROCKIES 7, METS 2 Jorge De La Rosa earned his 100th career victory as visiting Colorado beat New York for its fifth consecutive victory.

PADRES 2, REDS 1 (10) Adam Rosales homered leading off the 10th inning to give host San Diego a victory over Cincinnati.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, DODGERS 2 Braden Shipley pitched six scoreless innings to earn his first major league victory as visiting Arizona beat Los Angeles.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RANGERS 2, ROYALS 1 Mitch Moreland hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning and Texas beat visiting Kansas City.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 5 (10) Dioner Navarro hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning to lift Chicago to a victory over host Minnesota.

TIGERS 3, ASTROS 2 Jose Iglesias drove in the game-ending run on an infield single with two outs in the ninth inning to give Detroit a victory over visiting Houston.

INDIANS 6, ATHLETICS 3 Jason Kipnis hit one of host Cleveland's four home runs, leading the team to a victory over Oakland.

BLUE JAYS 9, ORIOLES 1 J.A. Happ won his eighth consecutive decision, Devon Travis homered and Toronto used a seven-run fifth inning to beat visiting Baltimore.

RAYS 6, YANKEES 3 Drew Smyly (Little Rock Central, Arkansas Razorbacks) struck out Alex Rodriguez three times en route to stopping an 11-start winless streak, and host Tampa Bay sent New York to its third consecutive loss.

ANGELS 5, RED SOX 2 Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run, Hector Santiago survived a rocky five innings to win his sixth consecutive start, and Los Angeles beat visiting Boston.

INTERLEAGUE

MARINERS 4, CUBS 1 Leonys Martin hit a two-run double off new Chicago closer Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning, lifting visiting Seattle to victory.
