Williams Baptist falls; season ends

The Williams Baptist softball team's run in the NAIA Softball World Series is over.

The Lady Eagles lost 7-1 Tuesday afternoon to Oklahoma City University at the Elizabeth and Irving Jensen Softball Complex in Sioux City, Iowa.

Williams Baptist, which won the American Midwest Conference Tournament championship, finished its season at 40-21.

"It was definitely a lot of fun," said first-year Coach Laura Tucker, who won more games in her first year than any other Williams Baptist coach. "I learned a lot about myself and the team this season. It was really special to me this first year to go this far."

Oklahoma City (63-3) had 14 hits Tuesday and stayed alive in the elimination bracket, facing Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) at 4 p.m. today.

Williams Baptist starting pitcher Rylee Rogers (26-11) went 32/3 innings. She allowed 6 runs, 5 earned, on 8 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3.

Ashley Lyons and Hayley Overbay had the Lady Eagles' only hits.

Williams Baptist lost its opening game of the World Series on Friday to Marian (Ind.) 2-0 to fall into the elimination bracket. The Lady Eagles defeated Simpson (Calif.) 1-0 on Saturday and Webber International (Fla.) 10-4 on Monday to advance to Tuesday's game.

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Kali Pugh's RBI single. Kayley Humann came home on a passed ball to make it 2-0 in the third inning.

Oklahoma City extended its lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning. Jaci Smith hit a three-run home run. Madison Ellis had an RBI double while Laci Joyner hit a run-scoring single.

Lyons' RBI single scored Callie Brooks to put Williams Baptist on the board, 7-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Georgia Wall (24-1) struck out 3 and walked 2 in 7 innings. Ellis and Stephanie Koishor each had two hits to lead Oklahoma City offensively.
