The Rocky Mountain Children's Choir from Denver will perform at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center on Wednesday.

The choir will sing songs that celebrate the American civil-rights movement as part of the Note by Note -- Building a Better World tour. The tour is a yearlong program in which participants learn about the history and importance of the civil-rights movement through music and special guest speakers.

The choir's tour will visit Little Rock; Helena-West Helena; Memphis; Birmingham, Ala.; Selma, Ala.; and New Orleans.

The Little Rock concert will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. It is free and open to the public.

Director to begin at cultural center

The new director of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will begin Monday.

Christina Thompson Shutt, the associate librarian for special collections and instruction at Hendrix College in Conway, was recently appointed as director of the center.

Shutt has a bachelor's degree in history from Central Methodist University and a master's degree in library science and archive management from Simmons College. She also has another master's degree from Simmons in history.

She previously worked at the Center for the History of Medicine at Harvard University, the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Archives.

"We are thrilled that Christina is coming on board to lead Mosaic Templars as director," said Stacey Hurst, director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

"Her enthusiasm, experience and passion for history will be a great asset to MTCC as it grows into its second decade and pursues its mission of telling the story of African-Americans in Arkansas from 1870 to the present," Hurst said.

Student art exhibit to open at gallery

A new exhibit will open at the Butler Center Galleries on Friday.

"School's Out: An Exhibition of Student Work by the Arkansas Arts Educators" will have its opening event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. The exhibit will be displayed through Aug. 27.

Das Loop, a duo that creates live loops and layers of polyrhythmic music, will perform experimental music at the opening.

The exhibit features works in various media created by Arkansas students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Arkansas Art Educators is a statewide group of art teachers "whose focus is to advocate for art education through supporting legislation and providing quality professional development for all art instructors in the state," according to a news release.

More information on the exhibit is available by calling (501) 918-3033.
