This year's show, Saturday and June 12 at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock, will be an even larger expo, founder Brent Douglass predicts.

"We have expanded to two days this year and teamed up with the Little Rock Picture Show, who will be screening films and shorts submitted to them from all over the world."

He credits the show's success to fan and sponsor support.

"There is a need for this large pop culture event that Little Rock, and Arkansas as a whole, had been missing," he says.

Other cities similar to Little Rock had "these great weekend comic conventions, where two or three days you can meet the creators of some of the characters you see on TV and movies now, dress up in cosplay [character costumes] and have fun," Douglass says. "And I would think, 'Why can't we have that here?'"

SCREEN AND SCREEN AGAIN

New to this year's River City Comic Expo, the Little Rock Picture Show is a science fiction, fantasy and horror film festival.

Festival director Justin Nickels says the partnership will be "an amazing opportunity for filmmakers, writers, artists and moviegoers alike."

The festival's opening event is a screening at 7 p.m. Friday of The Arbalest, about a toy inventor.

A screening of The Crow (1994) with the vengeful character's creator, comics artist James O'Barr attending, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ron Robinson Theater.

The silent screen version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), with a live score by the band Becoming Elephants, is scheduled at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at the Ron Robinson Theater.

Other features to be shown include Population Zero, The Hexecutioners and Frankenstein Created Bikers -- along with a selection of made-in-Arkansas shorts, among them: Blood Art, For Sale Bye Owner! and Don't You Forget About Me! A full schedule is available at rivercitycomicexpo.com.
