FAYETTEVILLE — Police arrested a man they said participated in the beating of a clerk and a fight at a local motel over the past weekend, according to a preliminary police report Tuesday.

Taje Dardillion Anderson, 19, of 50 E. Seventh St. in Fayetteville was arrested Sunday after police said he was involved in a fight at a local motel, according to the police report. Anderson later was arrested in connection with beating and taking items from an off-duty E-Z Mart clerk Saturday.

Anderson was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery and second-degree battery in connection with the beating, according to the police report.

The clerk, who was not on duty at the time, saw Anderson and three other people stealing items from E-Z Mart at 1950 N. Leverett Ave. at 2:18 a.m. Saturday, the report shows. The clerk told the on-duty clerk, according to the preliminary police report.

Anderson and another man then caught the off-duty clerk walking eastbound on Popular Street, the record shows. Police said the men asked the clerk: "Did you just snitch on us?" The men then beat and stomped the clerk while two women watched, according to the report.

The time between the thefts and beating was about one minute, according to the report. Video surveillance shows the incident, according to police.

The clerk was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion and amnesia, according to the report.

Police interviewed Anderson around 8:10 a.m. Monday, according to the report. During the interview, Anderson admitted to being the person in the surveillance video, police said. However, Anderson would not disclose who the other people were, according to the police report.

At the time of the beating, Anderson had been out of jail on bond in connection with an aggravated robbery of a taxi driver earlier this year, according to the police report. Police said in the report they believe Anderson “is a violent and dangerous person.” He showed no remorse for the attack on the clerk, according to the report.

Anderson was at the Washington County Detention Center with $50,365 in bonds Tuesday.
