James Valentine Jr., 58, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder and first-degree domestic battery in White County Circuit Court.

Judge Robert Edwards sentenced Valentine to 24 years on the murder charge and 12 years on the battery charge. Valentine is to serve the sentences consecutively, Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Reed McCoy said Wednesday.

Valentine entered the negotiated plea after originally being charged with capital murder in the death of Michael Hammond, 40, and first-degree battery in the wounding of Valentine's wife, Julia Valentine.

McCoy said the three lived together in Rose Bud.
