Blaze breaks out in North Little Rock apartment

North Little Rock firefighters were investigating a fire that started in a vacant apartment Thursday.

Authorities were called at 6:02 p.m. Thursday to Silver City Courts, 701 W. 18th St., said Fire Chief Jim Murphy.

The fire began in a vacant apartment in building 1008 while smoke spread to all the other units in the building. He said there was fire damage in two apartments and all four units had smoke damage of varying degrees.

Monica Walters, who was standing in a nearby parking lot when the fire started, said she saw the fire burst through the roof and called 911. Then Walters, who is 6½ months pregnant, said she knocked on every door alerting people to evacuate the building while the apartment burned.
