The flying milestone

Mrs. Malaprop would be proud of the lede Daniel Henninger used for his column in the Wall Street Journal the other day:

"There is a reason why Hillary Clinton's milestone as the U.S.'s first female presidential nominee is having trouble reaching elevation."

Ordinarily a highly readable and insightful observer of the fast-passing scene, Mr. Henninger may have been swept away by the general lunacy of this year's presidential campaign. And started envisioning milestones flying through the air like so many rockets. There's a simple rule in these matters: Before using a metaphor, picture it. That should cure anyone given to abusing the much abused thing once known as the English language.
