THE SCIENCE OF SUCCESS: Kevin Delaney, director of visitor experience at the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock, is set to make his fifth appearance on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Tuesday. He made his first appearance on the show in 2014 and since then has served as the show's "science expert," occasionally sharing science demonstrations with Fallon as his assistant.
LOCAL SCOOP: Little Rock's Loblolly was recently featured in The Wall Street Journal in an article about ice cream titled "Sundae Best" in the newspaper's "Off Duty" section. The second paragraph of the article notes, "At Loblolly Ice Cream Bar & Soda Fountain in Little Rock, Ark., the rolling roster of sundaes includes a beer-themed one, concocted from ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauces, all made with Flyway Brewing's Shadow Hands Stout, and topped with candied pecans, whipped cream and a house-made cherry." LOCAL VOICE: A New York Times article last week, "New Reality After Orlando Attacks: Dogs, Metal Detectors and Searches at Public Gatherings," quoted North Little Rock's Verizon Arena general manager Michael Marion. After attacks in Paris in November and in San Bernardino, Calif., in December, he installed 29 metal detectors costing a little shy of $100,000, with the arena raising its facilities fee surcharge 50 cents a ticket to help offset the cost.
"The additional security will certainly affect our bottom line," Marion told The New York Times. "But I haven't heard anybody say we don't want to spend that money."
NEVER GIVE UP: Little Rock Christian Academy student Georgiana Burnside, 17 and a figure skater, continues recovering from a severe spinal cord injury suffered in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colo., about a year ago. Immediately after the accident, Georgiana underwent surgery at Craig Hospital in Denver and later returned to Little Rock. In the year since the accident, she has made great strides and is walking again. She will move to Denver to focus on recovering.
"My recovery goal is to one day get back on the snow and be able to ski independently again," she says in a release from High Fives Foundation, which recently awarded her a $2,660 grant to aid in her continued recovery. "I hope to make as much progress as possible, but I also think it's important to find joy in the journey."
BIG WIN: Mike Cordell of Little Rock recently scored big at the 2016 47th annual World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas, winning first place in event No. 10 -- a six-hand no-limit hold 'em event with a $1,500 buy-in. The victory landed Cordell a WSOP bracelet and $346,088.
