Police arrested the chief of the Barling Fire Department on a driving while intoxicated charge Saturday, a state police spokesman said.

Bill Sadler, spokesman for the Arkansas State Police said that Barling police stopped a pair of motorcyclists, one of whom was Lewis Haggard, 53, about 10 p.m. The Barling officer suspected that Haggard was intoxicated, Sadler said.

Per the request of the Barling officer, a state trooper was sent to the stop. Sadler said the trooper arrested Haggard on DWI and breathalyzer refusal charges. State police took Haggard to the Sebastian County jail, where he was formally charged.

The district court in Greenwood said Haggard's attorney waived his client's arraignment Monday and that the trial is set to begin Sept. 14.
