Investigation ongoing into death of Henderson State student

An investigation is ongoing into the death of a Henderson State University student, according to a university spokesman.

In a statement sent out to the campus community, spokesman Tonya Smith said that the Henderson State Police Department responded about 9 p.m. Tuesday to a welfare check.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said that the student, Trevon Del Rio, 22, was found on the ground near a fence outside campus housing.

Police then transported Del Rio to an Arkadelphia hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors at 10:35 p.m., Sadler said.

The Henderson State Athletics website lists Del Rio as a a junior defensive lineman from La Marque, Texas, during Reddie football's 2015 season. He was not listed on the 2016 roster.

"Our Reddie family is a close-knit one, and we were saddened to learn of our student’s passing," Smith said. "We have been in contact with family to offer our condolences and assistance, and we will continue to assist in the coming days."

Sadler said his agency is assisting Henderson State campus police in the investigation. Del Rio's body has been transported to the state Crime Laboratory to determine a cause of death, according to authorities.

A number of people in the Henderson State community had posted condolences for Del Rio’s family via Twitter and Facebook as of Thursday morning.

A GoFundMe account was also created by family Wednesday to fund a celebration of life service for Del Rio. That campaign had received $625 by about 11 a.m. Thursday.
