FAYETTEVILLE -- Police arrested a man they said cut a woman with a knife and tried to take her car after she gave him a ride home, according to a preliminary police report.

Melvin Erick Gutierrez, 21, of Fayetteville was arrested early Thursday morning in connection with aggravated robbery, second-degree domestic battery, both felonies, and carrying a weapon, public intoxication and obstructing government operations, all misdemeanor offenses.

The woman's injuries weren't life-threatening, police spokesman Craig Stout said Thursday.

Gutierrez and the woman met on a dating app. The two had been on a date, Stout said.

The preliminary report shows the woman said she was attacked after she dropped Gutierrez off at his apartment.

Gutierrez told the woman he had a "gift" for her and asked her to wait while he went inside his apartment, according to the report. When he returned, Gutierrez pulled out a kitchen knife and told the woman he needed her car.

The two struggled, and Gutierrez tried to push her out of the car and said, "I'll cut you," according to the report. Gutierrez slashed at the woman while she pushed the car horn and screamed for help, according to the report.

The woman was cut twice on her right arm, according to the report.

Gutierrez fled, but left documents that identified him in the car, according to the report. Police also found a towel, drinking glass, nightgown and vodka bottle as evidence, the report shows.

Police found and arrested Gutierrez nearby.

Gutierrez was at the Washington County Detention Center with no bond Thursday.
