• The scene is the Washington National Episcopal Cathedral. Some 2,000 persons sit stunned, many crying. Twenty-six Little Rock high school students have just completed singing the life of Christ in chant and folk song. A Cathedral minister, after a couple of minutes, suggests that possibly the audience show its Christian enthusiasm by applauding. The audience gave a long, standing ovation. The National Cathedral's cornerstone was laid in 1809 and during that time many of the world's most famous musicians have performed there and audiences in the past have refrained from applauding. Tradition was broken June 19 for the Retreat Singers of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral of Little Rock.

CONWAY -- Two Conway lawyers have challenged the legality of a plan allowing three Faulkner County judges to handle chancery and criminal cases. Phil Stratton and Charles E. Clawson Jr. asked the state Supreme Court to prevent Judges David L. Reynolds, M. Watson Villines and Andre E. McNeil from creating "three permanent divisions." The case involves Tony A. Lee, 25, of Conway, who was charged with fourth offense driving while intoxicated on Feb. 12.

• Chickens in Maumelle? Horrors! But yes, city leaders say, there appear to be at least three flocks residing within the city limits. One was found roaming the grounds of the Country Club of Arkansas; a second cluster pecked its way through the mayor's part of town several months ago. And now Maumelle resident Jennifer Li has allowed a flock of fuzzy chicks to take up residence in her master bedroom. Who knows where they'll turn up next? To some, the presence of a few chickens might not seem like that big a deal. But this is Maumelle -- a former chunk of farmland that in the early 1970s was carefully planned as a a small, harmonious, suburban utopia.
