Firefighters were called to the Spanish Rock Apartments at 10:42 p.m. and saw smoke coming from a downstairs apartment, said Capt. Jason Weaver of the Little Rock Fire Department.

Three people were transported to hospitals, two for smoke inhalation and one for arm pain.

Smoke and water damage were contained to Apartment 119 where the fire started in a back bedroom, Weaver said. Two people were in the apartment at the time of the fire. Weaver also said that smoke had entered other units.

Kristoffer Parker, 12, was in the 2nd floor of the apartment building with his grandmother when smoke started to come into the kitchen. He said smoke filled the apartment, and he held on to his grandmother as he helped her out of the building. He described it as a scary and terrifying experience.

"My eyes were like burning," he said.

Kadijah Chapple, 20, lives in Building C on the third floor and pulled up to the building as people were evacuating. Chapple said she saw smoke streaming from the first floor of the building as she arrived at the building.

As of noon Sunday, the fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire. The department said it could take a couple of days for a complete report.

Weaver said the fire marshal will also determine whether the fire damaged the electrical system, which could displace other tenants.

An off-duty Little Rock police officer reported the fire.
