UA researchers win grant of $466,954

FAYETTEVILLE -- A $466,954 grant from the National Science Foundation will help University of Arkansas at Fayetteville researchers study a material known as black phosphorus that could be used in fiber-optic communication.

The material can be reduced to a single layer of atoms while serving as a semiconductor, according to UA.

"Black phosphorus exhibits strong potential for applications from thin-film electronics to infrared optoelectronics," said Hugh Churchill, an assistant professor of physics and an investigator on the research project.

Another UA assistant professor of physics, Salvador Barraza-Lopez, is also a project investigator.

Phillips 66 check backs UA initiatives

FAYETTEVILLE -- A $100,000 check from Phillips 66 will support engineering and business initiatives at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

The Houston-based company has worked recently with UA's Sam M. Walton College of Business and UA's College of Engineering.

The company has "strategically placed their resources across disciplines in the colleges from which they recruit, volunteer and develop future leaders," Marla Mayberry, UA's acting director of corporate and foundation relations, said in a statement.
