Biden-tied LR event takes aim at cancer

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is hosting an event today in coordination with a national initiative led by Vice President Joe Biden.

UAMS' Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute will hold the meeting on the 10th floor from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. Registration for the event starts at noon, and there is no need to pre-register.

The event will allow for learning about and participating in the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative, which was established earlier this year to help accelerate cancer research. The goal is to bring a decade's worth of advances in half that time, making more therapies available while also improving prevention and detection strategies, according to a news release.

Dr. Richard Nicholas, an orthopedic oncologist at UAMS, will lead the session, which will include doctors, researchers and health professionals at the academic medical center and other groups. Cancer survivors, cancer advocacy group representatives and the public can also participate.

UAMS is one of 30 sites across the nation hosting such an event in conjunction with Biden. He will be at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
