High bacteria levels force closure of Arkansas swim beach

Bacteria from a large amount of goose droppings is believed to be behind the closure of a swim beach in Heber Springs, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The swim beach in Dam Site Park on Greers Ferry Lake will remain closed indefinitely until E. coli levels are within an acceptable range, officials said in a news release, citing high bacteria levels found by the state Department of Health.

“A continual challenge in dealing with residential geese is the fact that people are feeding them,” the Corps said. “As a result, the geese become more used to human activity and start expecting to be fed every time someone walks or drives into an area.”

Visitors are advised by officials to not feed the geese, which are present in a higher concentration during this time of year.
