Survey: More in state planning major buys

Arkansas consumers are becoming more likely to make large purchases now because of low a unemployment rate, lower interest rates and the potential for inflation, according to a consumer sentiment survey backed by Arvest Bank.

The survey, conducted in March, focuses on consumers' attitudes about spending, saving and debt.

From September to March, the household savings rate increased from 13.9 percent to 16.4 percent, the survey said.

In Arkansas, 30 percent of those surveyed said they plan to make a major household purchase -- such as furniture, televisions and refrigerators -- in the next six months, up from 24 percent in September. Those seeking mortgage loans increased to 6 percent.
