An inmate from the Logan County jail who had been booked there on accusations he robbed a bank with an AK-47 has escaped, authorities said.

Logan County Sheriff Boyd Hicks said Shaun Higham, 45, managed to get out of jail early Tuesday morning along with 19-year-old Zachary Coffer. Both men were being held on aggravated robbery charges in separate cases.

Hicks said police recaptured Coffer Tuesday afternoon about a mile-and-a-half west of the jail, which is on west Grober Street in Paris.

Higham was also spotted then, the sheriff said, but he fled and remained on the loose Wednesday morning.

Hicks asked residents in the area to make sure their doors are locked and to report anything suspicious to police.

The escape itself remains under investigation.

"Somehow they were able to pick the cell door lock," Hicks said, adding Coffer and Higham then accessed an office where they were able to unlock another electronic door.

Hicks said Higham had been in jail about a year and was expected to agree to a plea deal in his case in the near-future.
