Cherard Durel Harriott, 26, was charged with capital murder in the death of Alex Ward, 25. Police said Harriott surrendered on an arrest warrant Wednesday morning. Details of the arrest weren't immediately available.

Harriott also faces charges of first-degree battery and second-degree unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

Ward was found shot multiple times about 6:04 p.m. on Jan. 31 between 14 Baltimore St. and an abandoned residence at 12 Baltimore St., just south of Granite Heights Park in the southeast part of Little Rock, police reported. Medical personnel tried to revive Ward at the scene, then transported him to UAMS Medical Center for treatment. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:18 p.m.

Investigators found eight 9mm shell casings near the scene of the shooting, according to a police report. A white Chevrolet Impala and a gold sedan were reportedly seen fleeing the area before police arrived.

Police spokesman Lt. Steve McClanahan said that, according to detectives, Harriott and Ward knew each other but were not related. Further details on their relationship were not released.

McClanahan said police do not expect additional arrests in the case.

"We always had [Harriott's] name out there, but we didn't have enough to get anything until some witnesses came forward," he said.

Ward's family offered a $5,000 reward last week for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Harriott, who was last known to reside at 1712 Tulane Ave. in Little Rock, was being held at the Pulaski County jail late Wednesday.

Court records show Harriott had been on probation after being convicted of two felony offenses in December 2015. He negotiated a guilty plea to felony fleeing and theft by receiving. The latter offense involved a stolen firearm.

Harriott was convicted of carrying a weapon, a misdemeanor, in 2013.
