Man arrested in slaying of West Memphis boy, 16

WEST MEMPHIS -- U.S. marshals arrested a West Memphis man in Independence, Mo., on Wednesday in the slaying of a 16-year-old boy, said Capt. Joe Baker, division commander for the West Memphis Police Department.

Aaron Long, 22, is accused of fatally shooting the teen Tuesday evening in the Crittenden County town.

Police did not name the victim.

Officers were called to a shooting in the 700 block of South Avalon Street in southern West Memphis at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found the teen lying unresponsive in the street with a gunshot wound, Baker said.

The victim was transported to Regional One Health in Memphis, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives learned that Long had left West Memphis on Tuesday evening and was in Independence, Mo.

The U.S. marshal's office and the Eastern Arkansas Fugitive Task Force apprehended Long at 1 p.m. Wednesday as he was walking from a residence in the Missouri town.

Long will be extradited within the week to West Memphis, where he will face charges, Baker said.
