Yankees wake up late, rally in 9th to beat Rangers

NEW YORK -- Brian McCann hit a tying, three-run home run off Sam Dyson, Didi Gregorius capped a six-run ninth inning with his two-run shot and the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 9-7 Wednesday night.

Down 7-2 and in danger of falling 10 games behind AL East-leading Baltimore, the Yankees began their comeback when McCann hit a solo home run off Cesar Ramos in the eighth.

Rob Refsnyder singled off Matt Bush leading off the ninth, Jacoby Ellsbury walked and Dyson (1-2) relieved.

Brett Gardner singled and Refsnyder came home when center fielder Ian Desmond bobbled the ball for an error. After Alex Rodriguez lined out, McCann homered into the right-field bleachers, Starlin Castro walked and Gregorius lined the ball into the right-field seats for his first career game-ending home run.

Luis Cessa (1-0) allowed one run in three innings for his first big league victory.

With slugger Carlos Beltran sitting out because of a hamstring injury, Rodriguez went 0 for 5 with a double-play grounder. Fans booed when he grounded out in the eighth.

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka gave up 6 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings, raising his ERA to 3.35. Rangers starter Nick Martinez allowed 2 runs, 3 hits and 5 walks in 5-plus innings and threw just 38 of 84 pitches for strikes.

Nomar Mazara was in a 10-for-56 slide before his three-run double in the third. Mazara scored on Prince Fielder's single off a diving Refsnyder at first for a 5-1 lead.

ASTROS 10, ANGELS 4 Jose Altuve went 4 for 5 and scored four runs to help Houston beat host Los Angeles and complete the sweep of the three-game series.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 0 Matt Moore pitched seven spotless innings and Brandon Guyer homered and drove in two runs, leading host Tampa Bay to a victory over David Price and Boston.

WHITE SOX 9, TWINS 6 James Shields (3-9) broke out of a slump, allowing 1 run on 8 hits over 62/3 innings, helping host Chicago beat Minnesota.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CUBS 9, REDS 2 Anthony Rizzo legged out his first inside-the-park home run -- another unusual moment in a series full of oddities -- and Chicago beat host Cincinnati for a three-game sweep.

PHILLIES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 8 (10) Pinch-hitter Tyler Goeddel hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and visiting Philadelphia completed its first sweep at Chase Field in 10 years with a victory over Arizona.

NATIONALS 4, METS 2 Daniel Murphy homered twice and host Washington completed a three-game sweep of New York. Max Scherzer (9-5) cruised against New York's sputtering offense, allowing 2 hits with 10 strikeouts over 71/3 innings.

BREWERS 7, DODGERS 0 Junior Guerra allowed two hits over eight innings, Ryan Braun hit a two-run home run and a two-run double and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run shot to carry Milwaukee to a victory over visiting Los Angeles.

INTERLEAGUE

TIGERS 10, MARLINS 3 Miguel Cabrera hit one of three home runs for host Detroit in their victory over Miami. Steven Moya and Jarrod Saltalamacchia cleared the fence in consecutive at-bats in the fifth, giving Detroit an 8-2 lead.

ROYALS 3, CARDINALS 2 (12) Alcides Escobar hit a go-ahead RBI double just inside the right-field line in the 12th inning and Kansas City outlasted host St. Louis.

BLUE JAYS 5, ROCKIES 3 Aaron Sanchez allowed one run in eight innings and Josh Donaldson homered to lead visiting Toronto to a victory over Colorado. Sanchez (8-1) allowed 6 hits, struck out 3 and walked 2.

ORIOLES 12, PADRES 6 Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 23rd home run and drove in four runs for visiting Baltimore, which beat San Diego for its seventh consecutive victory.

INDIANS 3, BRAVES 0 Danny Salazar (10-3) allowed 5 hits with 8 strikeouts over 7 innings as Cleveland stretched its winning streak to 12 games by beating host Atlanta.
