Two Eureka Springs residents were killed in a single-engine plane crash in west Texas on Tuesday, according to the state's Department of Public Safety.

The pilot, James Estol Hathcock, 63, and a passenger, Aaron T. Taylor, 33, died after the two-seat Vans RV-6 experimental aircraft crashed at Elmdale Airpark near Abilene, said State Trooper Fred Biddle, spokesman for the Abilene district.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane exploded on impact during the crash, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the crash.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
