Kingston's press builds huge edge

BROCKWELL -- The Kingston Lady Yellowjackets built a 22-point, but the Caddo Hills Lady Indians made the last 2½ quarters interesting before falling 59-47 on Thursday evening in the first round of the Class 1A girls state tournament at Izard County High School.

Everything was clicking for the Lady Yellowjackets (37-4) early on as their full-court press stifled anything the Lady Indians (22-13) wanted to do while the offense consisted of mostly layups off turnovers. Just under four minutes into the contest, Kingston was up 10-0 and Caddo Hills had gotten the ball past half court only once.

After the Lady Indians finally got on the board, the Lady Yellowjackets finished the first quarter with a 9-2 run for a 19-4 advantage.

A layup by Alesha Anderson at the 3:32 mark of the second quarter gave Kingston a 31-9 advantage. But leading scorer and senior forward Hanna Villines was whistled for her second and third fouls, and she had to take a seat.

Without her in the lineup, the Lady Yellowjackets' offense did not score the rest of the first half, and the Lady Indians scored eight in a row to close the gap to 31-17 by halftime.

Caddo Hills kept that momentum going in the second half, scoring the first four points and closing to within 31-21 on a layup by Haley Ortiz. Villines scored the next five for Kingston on a three-pointer and a steal and layup for a 36-21 lead with 5:38 left in the third. Shortly thereafter, Villines picked up her fourth foul and returned to the bench, but Kingston led by as many as 16 before taking a 47-32 lead into the fourth.

Kingston was up 48-37 when the Lady Indians missed two shots to get the deficit into single digits, but the Lady Yellowjackets put the game away wit a 6-0 run.

Emily Villines led Kingston with 16 points while Hannah Villines had 14 and Brooke Barron tallied 13.

Sara Bershears led Caddo Hills with 11 points.

Scranton 62, Acorn 39

The Lady Rockets (26-7) knocked down 11 three-pointers and had a 36-15 run over the middle two quarters, where they made eight of those three-pointers.

Shelby Frost led Scranton with 14 points, Kristy Geels had 11, and Emmy Schluterman and Kirklyn Kremers each added nine.

Ashlee Long and Tori Barrett each scored 10 to lead Acorn (26-14)

KIRBY 60, SACRED HEART 33

The Lady Trojans (37-2) rolled to another state-tournament victory to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Kirby jumped out to a 20-8 advantage lead after the first quarter and increased it to 30-17 at halftime. Kirby’s Kallee Cowart had 20 points and Gracen Smith added 10. Taylor Usery scored 14 points to lead Sacred Heart (28-12).
