Cold blast to bring springtime storms; severe weather possible

The National Weather Service in Little Rock said a mid-week cold front could produce severe weather in western Arkansas starting Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Little Rock said a mid-week cold front could produce severe weather in western Arkansas starting Wednesday.

Frosty temperatures Monday will warm Tuesday before another round of cold arrives, bringing the possibility of mid-week storms, the National Weather Service said.

Meteorologist Tabitha Clarke said the storms could pack hail and strong straight-line winds. The Storm Prediction Center placed a large part of Arkansas generally west of a line from Batesville to Little Rock under a slight risk for severe weather.

Temperatures in central Arkansas hovered around freezing overnight Sunday but were expected to rise to around 60 degrees across much of the state later Monday, according to the weather service's North Little Rock office.

The second cold front is expected to arrive late Wednesday afternoon in western Arkansas, Clarke said.

"It looks like it's going to be a real quick move in and actually get through the state quickly," Clarke said, adding that storms will be less severe as the storm moves eastward overnight.

By Thursday afternoon, Arkansans can expect to start seeing sunshine again, she said.
