TEXARKANA, Ark. — A man accused of sending threatening letters to seven south Arkansas mayors has been released from federal custody on a $10,000 bond.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Caroline Craven ruled Monday that 55-year-old Maverick Bryan could be released from custody as his federal case proceeds.
Bryan was indicted earlier this month on a federal charge of mailing a threatening communication. Federal prosecutors accused Bryan of sending letters in January 2015, threatening to hang mayors if they did not put prayer and the Ten Commandments in schools. The letters were sent to the mayors of Ashdown, Hope, De Queen, Lewisville, Nashville, Prescott and Murfreesboro.
The Texarkana Gazette reports that Bryan admitted under oath that he sent the letters, but said he only wanted to get the officials' attention, not harm them.
