A 25-year-old man remained jailed Monday night after he was arrested early Monday morning on accusations he beat a 5-year-old girl and his girlfriend before trying to set his North Little Rock apartment on fire, North Little Rock police said.

Joshua Kordell Giles faces charges of second-degree domestic battery, aggravated assault on a family member, third-degree assault on a family member, arson and resisting arrest.

Officers were called at 3:15 a.m. to the apartment, at 5137 Velvet Ridge Drive, where they found a man walking from the complex with the girl. The man used the girl as a shield and had his arm around her neck before officers subdued him with a stun gun, police said.

Police also found a small fire they say was set when the man placed his shirt on a stove and turned on the stove. They also found a child's scooter broken into three pieces after being thrown through a wall and a pipe of the type used to smoke illicit drugs.

The man's girlfriend told officers that he struck the girl in the face with his fist, cutting her lip and knocking out her front teeth.
