Man charged after human remains found in barrel

BEDFORD, Va. — A Virginia man has been charged after deputies say human remains were found in a barrel at his home.

The Bedford County sheriff's office told media outlets in a statement Monday that 47-year-old Robert Wozniak is charged with disposing of a body with malicious intent to avoid detection and four counts of obtaining money by false pretense.

The charges came after a homeowner reported finding a barrel containing possible human remains at the residence Saturday. The homeowner, who had been renting to Wozniak since January, told deputies the barrel belonged to Wozniak.

Authorities suspect the remains are several months old. They were taken to the medical examiner's office for further evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing.

Wozniak is being held without bond. It isn't clear whether he has an attorney.
