ANGELS

Shoemaker sent to Salt Lake

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Los Angeles Angels have optioned right-handed starter Matt Shoemaker to Class AAA Salt Lake in one of five roster moves Sunday.

Shoemaker (1-4) allowed 7 earned runs in 21/3 innings Saturday night as the Texas Rangers scored 6 in the third in a 7-2 victory. He has a 9.15 ERA in five starts. As a rookie in 2014, Shoemaker went 16-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

Manager Mike Scioscia said the Angels might not need to fill Shoemaker's spot in the rotation until May 14 because of scheduled off days.

Right-hander A.J. Achter was recalled from Salt Lake.

Outfielder Craig Gentry (Fort Smith, Arkansas Razorbacks) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right lumbar spine strain.

Left-hander C.J. Wilson (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for outfielder Shane Robinson, who was called up from Salt Lake. Robinson was in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

RANGERS

Hamilton gets cortisone shot

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Josh Hamilton was in the Rangers' clubhouse prior to Sunday's game against the Angels, which seemed unusual considering he's supposed to be on at least a 10-day rehab assignment in Frisco.

Turns out, he was in Arlington to get his left knee checked. President of baseball operations Jon Daniels said Sunday that Hamilton was given a cortisone shot after experiencing recurring discomfort in the knee while running the bases during Saturday's game in Frisco.

Hamilton started in left field and played four innings.

Daniels said Hamilton will continue to rehab in Arlington while the Rangers begin a seven-game road trip Monday at Toronto. Daniels said it isn't known how long Hamilton will be sidelined, but he must wait a minimum of five days before he can return to a minor league rehab assignment.

Hamilton, who turns 35 on May 21, was supposed to play five innings on Saturday, but came out after four innings. He said Saturday night that there was no particular reason that he came out early.

"I think progress has been good," he said at the time. "I haven't done too much, too fast. The legs are feeling better, the quads aren't hurting, the calves are feeling better."

But his left knee, it turns out, isn't any better.
