Public to be heard on leadership shift

A committee of Arkansas legislators from Little Rock is hosting a public forum today to hear from the public about the state-directed change in the leadership in the Little Rock School District.

Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key is allowing Superintendent Baker Kurrus' contract to expire June 30 and has announced he will replace Kurrus with Michael Poore, a superintendent for five years in the Bentonville School District.

The forum will be from 4-6 p.m. at the state Capitol in the Old Supreme Court Chamber, which is on the second floor at the south end of building.

District to revisit attendance zones

The Jacksonville/North Pulaski School Board will consider revised elementary school attendance zones as well as possible changes in school names, colors and mascots at its 6:30 p.m. meeting today at Jacksonville City Hall.

The new district, formed by a state Board of Education order in November 2014, will detach from the Pulaski County Special School District and operate on its own starting July 1.

The new district will operate with one high school, which is the current Jacksonville High and home of the Red Devils mascot. The current North Pulaski High School, home of the Falcons, will become the new district's middle school.
