Cards' Nielson handles Travs

Trey Nielson pitched six scoreless innings and the Springfield Cardinals defeated the Arkansas Travelers 7-1 on Monday afternoon at Hammonds Field in Springfield, Mo.

Nielson (2-2) gave up one hit, struck out four and didn't walk a batter. The right-hander allowed three base runners.

The Travs split their four-game series with the Cardinals. They entered the series after losing 3 of 4 in Tulsa.

Harrison Bader and Bruce Caldwell each went 2 for 4 to lead the Cardinals offensively. David Washington hit a three-run home run.

Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. A wild pitch by Travs starter Alex Blackford allowed Paul DeJong to score for a 1-0 lead. Bader's RBI double scored Carson Kelly to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals made it 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on Caldwell's RBI double, which scored Bader. They added four runs in the eighth inning for a 7-0 lead. Luke Voit hit an RBI single and Washington hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot off Travs reliever Geoff Broussard.

Eric Aguilera hit an RBI single in the ninth inning for the Travs' only run.

Blackford (2-2) walked six in three innings. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and struck out 1.

Aguilera led the Travs, going 2 for 3. Brandon Bayardi and Chad Hinshaw each had a hit for Arkansas.

The Travs return home today to begin an eight-game homestand, beginning with a four-game series against Tulsa.
