LR schools subject of 'Teach-In' event

The future of the Little Rock School District and the privatization of schools in other communities will be the focus of a "Teach-In Town Hall" from 6-8 p.m. today at St. Mark Baptist Church, 5722 W. 12th St. in Little Rock.

Jitu Brown, national director of Journey for Justice, will speak about privatization and state takeovers of traditional public schools in communities across the country and how grassroots movements have fought for change that benefits students.

The event, which is open to the public, will also feature updates from community leaders about the status of the Little Rock School District. The district is operating under state control because some schools are in academic distress, and it's on the verge of a disputed superintendent change. Audience members will be invited to share their thoughts and opinions about the district, which serves 25,500 pupils in prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Marion A. Humphrey Jr., an organizational specialist in Little Rock for the National Education Association, is the coordinator of the Teach-In Town Hall.
