Huckabee decries Trump naysayers

Rescind GOP allegiance, he urges

Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says Republicans should rally around New York businessman Donald Trump or consider leaving the party completely.

The former Arkansas governor denounced those who remain in the #NeverTrump camp, saying on Fox News Thursday morning that "you're either on the team or you're not on the team."

Aides to George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush said this week that the former presidents do not plan to endorse the presumptive nominee.

Former Republican nominees John McCain and Mitt Romney have indicated they plan to skip the party's nominating convention July 18-21 in Cleveland.

And Thursday afternoon, House Speaker Paul Ryan indicated uneasiness with the only GOP candidate remaining in the field, telling CNN that he is not yet ready to endorse Trump.

Huckabee, who made the comments from a Little Rock television studio, said he is "really disappointed, in fact a little outraged" by those who are reluctant to back the party's presumptive nominee.

"If they're not going to support the people that the Republicans nominated, then they need to get out of the Republican Party and admit that they're no longer Republican, that they're something else. Or that they need to just be honest and say, 'I only want it when I get it my way,'" Huckabee said.

The Fox News contributor, who dropped out of the 2016 presidential race after finishing ninth in Iowa, has defended Trump on cable news stations repeatedly in recent months.

His daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is one of Trump's senior advisers and a frequent surrogate for the campaign.

While Huckabee is telling Republicans to get on the bandwagon or get out, others are rejecting that type of litmus test.

"We're not encouraging anyone to leave the Republican Party," said Republican Party of Arkansas spokesman Lauren Montgomery.

She predicted the primary season wounds will heal and the partisans will rally.

"It's going to take some time. We'll refocus and by the time November rolls around, I think the party will unify behind Donald Trump," she said.
